Set design for the original 1906 production of Frank Wedekind’s play Frühlings Erwachen.
So remember how I said Eva and Spring Awakening have a lot in commom?? (Spring awakening is a german play about 14-year-olds and their awakening sexualities and how society screws them over and it’s pretty tragic. There’s also a broadway musical)
So I decided to grab that and run with it and do a crossover sorta thinghahaha yeah. I can’t seem to find one sole role for Shinji, so first I made him Ernst for Kaworu’s Hanschen?? Than I made him Wendla for Asuka’s Melchior??? and that was really fun (I really wanted to draw him in stockings. and the beating scene ahhaha). But in the end Shinji is most likely Moritz, and I realised Mari is the perfect Ilse too. (alternatively, Shinji could also be Hanschen, just because, you know, masturbation scene.)
And Rei fits the Martha bill to a tee.
Eva and Spring Awakening have quite a few things in commom. 14 year olds struggling with their sexualities and general relationships with others, suffering with various levels of disconnection from their parents, there’s some gayness and someone loses his head in a literal sense. Oh, of course, there’s also a dude jerking off.
Melchior, Wendla and Moritz from Spring Awakeningggggggg
Just watched a random brazilian production from Spring Awakening (non-musical) on youtube. It was pretty interesting despite the fact that some parts seem to be missing from the recording… also I’m not sure how I feel about al the girls suddenly making out with each other while sitting on Moritz’s dead body… Actually, I do. I’m pretty sure I didn’t really get that.
The other day I was at the library and suddenly I saw a book about German Expressionist Theatre. I leafed through it and of course it talked about Wedekind and a bit of Spring Awakening. Haha!
ANYWAYS! On friday I’m watching another production that some people I met are taking part in. So I’m pretty excited about that~ Lots of Spring Awakening in my life~
Was listening to some workshop versions of Spring Awakening songs… I really like how in the end of Touch Me, Moritz says “I swear! I’d a hundred times rather feel what the girl must feel.” I really liked this aspect of his character in the original play, in this scene particularly he seems to really glorify this passive role that he imagines, while Melchior is like, “yeah whatever I don’t like to think about that”. Also, the musical doesn’t have the whole story about the Headless Queen that he can’t get out of his mind, does it? That was really interesting too. I think I’m a little obsessed with Wedekind…
