and to, i don’t understand why people get so angry when you say they shouldn’t use the word queer
if it’s just a word that can mean whatever you want
why don’t you just go find a new word that does the same thing
Ok. I’d like to throw in my two cents here.
QUEER is a umbrella term and englobes a lot of what is non-heteronormative.
It doesn’t mean non-normal, but it doesn’t just mean same-sex attraction. First of all, saying that already excludes a lot of people with non-binary ideas of gender. Say, regardless of the gender/sex they are attracted to, transexual indivuduals or anyone with a non-binary gender identity (genderqueer people exist also ok?) obviously fit into the realms of queer.
Secondly, ok, I’m pretty sure asexuals aren’t killed or viciously attacked like homosexuals and transexuals have been throughout the ages (as far as I know). But society is oppressive because it tells people they should have a certain amount of sex. If you have too much, you’re considered a slut, or a pervert, or whatever. If you don’t want to have it at all, people will say you’re messed in the head and that you’re missing out on half of the awesomeness of life. Usually people won’t punch you in the face for being ace, but will think of thei sexuality as a joke and not make a drop of effort to understand it. Just becuase you can’t imagine what oppression could asexuals possibly get doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, and enough of invalidating others experiences. Defining one’s sexuality, when one realises that it isn’t exactly the heterosexual ideal society is so obsessed with propagating, is hard for most. Yes, even if people aren’t bashing Fluorescent lamps on your head.
Also, people are accusing asexuals of being slut-shamers? I mean what? I’ve honestly never seen asexual people preaching about people keeping their legs closed, they just don’t feel like opening theirs. In fact tumblr really seems to have fun judging every ace as immature kids who want a cool special label. Yeah, maybe those exists, but can everyone just quit erasing asexual people?
So in conclusion: if an ace wants to use the word queer, just let them. Seriously, this seems more of a case of SJW preaching around than queer people feeling offended because of appropriation.
